Several different lines are planned:[3]
The project was unveiled in 2008, with construction planned to start in 2009.[4] However, construction has been repeatedly delayed. By December 2009, construction was expected to start in 2011.[5] Consultants were prequalified in 2010;[6] as of January 2010, the project was still awaiting budgetary approval[7] but it was hoped that construction could begin before the end of 2012.[8]
The first phase, including 24km of light rail network, is expected to cost BD453 million. Subsequent phases will cost more.[9]
